Today, another group played our game and provided us with some useful feedback. They helped us come up with some new rules to further enhance the gaming experience. The players seemed to be really enjoying the game and wanted to keep playing. For next week, we will make a box for the game and be ready for evaluation.

Today, we found out that Stephanie decided to withdraw from the class, which puts us in a bad situation. Since she assured us that she would do most of the game board work on Photoshop, now it is up to us to do everything. We are now down to three people in our group with one week left before we have to have a prototype. Although it will be difficult, we will somehow pull it off...

Today, we finally finished coming up with the idea of our game.

The game can be played with 2-4 players. The story behind the game is that terrorists have captured the President of the United States and attached him to a bomb. The F.B.I., the C.I.A., the N.S.A., and the Secret Service are all determined to save the President. The four agencies start at one end of the board, each with nine agents in their headquarters, and the President will be at the other end of the board, attached to a ticking time bomb (which is also a spinner that the players use to determine how many spots they move during each turn).

The goal of the game is to be the agency to get to the President first and save him and bring him back to their headquarters. However, it will not be an easy mission as there will be obstacles in the way of getting to the President, such as terrorists trying to attack you before you can save the President. As well as coming up with the idea of our game, we started designing our game board. Certain spaces along the way to reaching the President will be marked as "Terrorist".

When landing on a square with a Terrorist, the player and the player who is closest to the President on the game board must spin the spinner to see who gets the higher number.
  • If the player wins, the agent kills the terrorist.
  • If the other player wins, the terrorist kills the agent.

In addition to coming up with the idea and starting to design our game board, we began looking for game pieces to represent the players as the President and F.B.I., C.I.A., N.S.A., and Secret Service agents.

2/2/11

Today, we only had half of the class time we usually have because of the snow. We presented chapters 5 and 6 of our book Challenges for Game Designers. We realized the concept of our game may not work out easily. We decided to come up with a new idea for our game. We want to try to incorporate some of our ideas from Survive and Conquer, but also make a game more realistic or with a better background story. We came up with an idea of a game that will have a similar idea, but has to do with four agencies trying to save the president (the C.I.A., the F.B.I., Secret Service, and the N.S.A.). We are still coming up with the concepts/rules of the game... but we are running out of time since class was delayed today.

Today, we decided to combine all 4 of our grid game ideas to create our first collaborative game, Survive and Conquer. We took Jackie's idea of a clock as a spinner, Nic's idea of a chess-like setup, Stephanie's idea of making the game somewhat geographical, and Keith's idea of using four corners on the game board. Our game is a strategy based war game, fought amongst America, Russia, India, and China. The goal of the game is to diffuse the doomsday clock and get each country's leaders in your corner.
